I’m a Scottish artist based in Dorset, England. I’m currently studying Fine Art and Painting with the Open College of the Arts, following an earlier career in design and technical illustration. I work across drawing, painting and printmaking.
I work from places I know and return to, particularly Dartmoor, the Jurassic Coast and West Cornwall. My work uses paint, found materials, drawing and printmaking to build up marks and surfaces rather than directly copying what I see.
My printmaking includes multi-plate drypoint, solar etching and carborundum paste collagraphs.
I’m a member of Dorset Visual Arts and Poole Printmakers. My work has been exhibited with Poole Printmakers, selected for promotional material and sold through the group.
Artist Statement
I dislike prettiness. I rip, scratch, and scrape onto scraps of paper with paint and materials physically bound to the landscape, crushed Portland stone, dark Kimmeridge clay, and fractured chalk from Old Harry Rocks ground directly into the pigment. Influenced by the wild, atmospheric terrains of Dartmoor, West Cornwall and the Jurassic Coast, I paint the memory of place. I have to be there, otherwise I can’t get it. What happens next is closer to a negotiation than a plan; deliberate marks set beside ones I can't fully control, compositions that refuse to settle. Printmaking follows the same instinct, building images from layered etched plates, each leaving a different mark as the image develops through repetition, adjustment, and chance. I never start with anything fully resolved. The picture develops fluidly as I work, layered with unpredictable marks and surfaces. By the end, I've left the source behind, leaving a raw record of physical struggle.
